Friend/fellow/buddy/dude/chap/mate/soul mate/colleague/peer/...
All these words describe some mental connection.
A long-long time ago, say at age of 10, I started with dividing the friendship world into 3 categories:
1. friends, which are more like family; Sometimes they ARE family.
2. friends, which are closest to me. The people, which I'd like to have as relatives. The people, who will help me without preconditions. The people, I'd like to help anytime.
3. friends, who are 'the circle of life', my communication peers, my milieu. The people, I feel good with, the people, I'd like to go out with.
